Worst part of the season for sure is fitness testing day. Its always a day that brings a little bit of nerves as you know the coaching and management staff are watching all your results. For those wondering what the typical tests are they usually consists of these although it differs from team to team. I will also add what the average hockey player lifts as well for each exercise…
- Max Squat: 375lbs
- Max Bench Press: 235lbs
- Max Pull Ups: 15
- Max V02 test run/bike: 22 minutes
- Skate test – skate goal line to goal line x2.5 in under 42 seconds (3 repetitions) : About 6-7 players fail this test each year
- Agility Test- 3 cones spaced 5 meters apart. Run from 1st cone to 3rd cone and back through the middle: 4.8 Seconds average score
Of course these results will differ on the type of player you are and how tall/heavy you are. These averages are just based over the NHL/AHL/Europe testing I have done over my 10 years in Pro hockey. Interesting note is that the Europeans have generally done better in the weight lifting portions of the testing where the North Americans seem to do better on the on-ice portion. I have done different types of testing but the ones I listed are the main ones. In case you are wondering which teams have the hardest testing they are the Colorado Avalanche and the Columbus Blue Jackets. After some of the skate/run tests my legs were in so much pain that I couldn’t stand for 5 minutes and when I finally did stand it felt like I was standing on two cooked spaghetti noodles for legs. Tough days.
