The interesting life of a professional minor league hockey player

Another road game, Another broken down bus

Its the beginning of January and we are on the road again going from Fehervar, Hungary into Villach, Austria which is about a 6 hour drive by bus. We lose the game in 2-1 in OT which is heartbreaking since we get scored on with less than 5 minutes left to give up a 1-0 lead. After the game we start to head home and we get about 1 hour into our journey when we have to pull over at a gas station because there is a problem with the “cooling” part in our bus’ engine. We find out that our bus is no longer able to drive and that we cant get a replacement bus since it is too late in the night (1AM). So our only option is to get a bus to drive from Fehervar (4 hour drive) to pick us up and drive us back home to Fehervar. You could imagine our disappointment when we hear the news and realize that we have to sleep in the broken down bus (which is very cold because its about -6 degrees outside) and wait for our working bus to get us. Anyways after a long night we transfer buses and stroll into Fehervar around 10:30AM. Its nights like these that the fans don’t see that make a player wonder if its time to retire or not. This is the type of situation an NHL player will never understand or find himself in. Only in the deep minors do things like this take place.
